What is Hippotherapy?

Hippotherapy (as described by the American Hippotherapy Association, Inc.) is the skilled and purposeful manipulation of equine ( horse) movement as a treatment tool provided by a Physical Therapist, Occupation Therapist or Speech Language Pathologist. When appropriate, it may be used as part of an integrated plan of care with other treatment strategies  for enhanced therapeutic outcomes. 

Why Hippotherapy?

The horse’s movement offers multiple motor and sensory inputs to the patient which are purposely manipulated by a skilled therapist to facilitate desired responses. Carryover of improvements seen when off the horse, can include improved balance, ambulation, and performance with daily tasks and activities.
